Finally, another interview coming

I got a rare kind of contact from my listing on Dice.com. It was an e-mail directly from someone in a technology company who wasn't a recruiter or an HR person, but actually the person for whom I'd be working if I was hired. So I called him back quickly.

It sounds great. It's a Perl/Linux/open-source shop all the way. What's more, they and their products are very well known in the open-source world. I confessed not having direct experience with the product I'd be working on, but that didn't seem to be a negative. I have an interview in less than a week.

Hey, here's an open question for those who have interviewed with smallish programming shops--I know there's one or two of you out there. ;-) How would wearing a tie, say an unconventional '40s-vintage tie, affect my chances of being hired (compared to going business-casual with no tie)? Positively? Negatively?

Yay for interview!
I'm not a small programming shop, but I like ties!

Only if the tie has personality. Or improves your confidence.

I'm biased. The tie would not phase me in the least. And I agree with Jope. If it reveals your true personality and it makes you feel confident about that, bonus points.

I think small shops, especially those of the FOSS bent with a we-can-do-anything attitude, actually keep an eye out for unique characters because they understand the whole brilliant-person-in-the-funny-clothing thing.

Shorts!

At our office I like to joke you're dressed up if you are wearing shoes and long pants (although I think I'm actually the only one regularly wearing sandals, so...)

Anyway - a more serious answer: Whatever makes you the most comfortable in that situation. Obviously "comfortable" includes fitting in. At our office I know one of my colleagues would give you a hard time about wearing a tie, but on the other hand we've been in suits and ties occasionally when we went to see other people, too.
